Armed robber dies after eight people sit on him

An armed robber died in a bungled jewellery shop raid when eight have-a-go heroes sat on top of him until police arrived, a coroner heard.
Clint Townsend stopped breathing when the shoppers piled on top of him in a 'melee' at Oxford's historic Covered Market.
The 33-year-old, who was wearing motorcycle gear and a helmet, had smashed the window of a jewellery shop repeatedly with a sledgehammer, before wrestling with the store's manager and owner.

I don't believe many would suggest that the law be changed to 'death by squashing' as the penalty for attempted robbery, but when an accident such as this occurs as a direct result of what this low life attempted, many, will see it as self inflicted rough justice and a victory for the side of 'right', as a bit of balance against all those who get away with it.
The world will in all likelihood be a better place without him in it.

Eight people is a lot, I would say.
On the other side, if he stops struggling and trying to get away and take his justice. eight people probably don't try. It not like eight people were punching and kicking him.

As opposed to some of the comments on this thread that suggest death is a proportionate response to attempted robbery?
The sensible line lies somewhere in between; not glorifying in the death of an idiot, nor prosecuting those responsible for it.

Have a look at some of the comments on the article. Here is one:
I can't believe some of the comments on here thinking it is ok for the death of this person by all of these people, and this one man being smothered to death is ok. Yes he was committing a crime, there were already people restraining him and then more people come by, members of the public to come and sit on this man. And across his chest! How is this right. He was trying to get away. The law is in place for a reason. It does not state you can kill. I do sympathise with the man committing the crime and his family. The people who decided to sit on top of him should be tried in court. How dare they think this is ok
